I was riding home from work tonight, and the problem got much worse. It died every time I came to a stop and was backfiring a lot, sometimes very loud. When I got home I checked the vacuum line again, this time taking it completely off. I assumed since I just replaced the line, ,it was ok but I was wrong. I bought the line at napa, and the only size they had that was close to the same size as the original was a tiny bit bigger, orange and much softer that the original. I didn't like the orange color so I wraped with electrical tape before I put it on. I then used small hose clamps to make it tight and compensate for the bigger size. Well, I guess from a combination of being so soft and having the hose clamps so tight, it had ripped in half right near where it comes off the carb...I just couldn't tell because the tape around it stayed intact. I ended up using one of the old float bowl vent tubes, which I had also replaced with the orange stuff, that was in good condition. I cut it sorter, put it on and took a test ride. So far the stalling is gone, so I assume that the line was the problem.

thanks for the replies,
Mike
